Just Energy, a Texas electricity provider, was founded in 1997. The company expanded through acquisitions went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and entered the U.S. market in 2004. In 2021, Just Energy filed for bankruptcy protection due to financial stress from Winter Storm Uri. The company was subsequently acquired by lenders and continues to operate as a private company

Just Energy, emerged from bankruptcy in 2022, and has operated as a private company since. Their pricing is mid pack - reflecting a conservative approach towards customer acquision. In other words prices will remain on the higher side.

Just Energy is a capable company and feratures modern online conveinces, good bill pay, customer service, etc. Since they emerged from bankruptcy in 2022, rates tend to be mid pack and there's not much differentiation between their affinity brands: Tara Energy and Amigo energy.

Based on these customer reviews from 2009-2024, Just Energy appears to be a highly problematic electricity provider. Common complaints include misleading sales tactics, hidden fees, billing errors, poor customer service with long hold times, and difficulty canceling service. Many customers report unexpectedly high bills, aggressive disconnection policies, and being locked into long-term contracts (often 5 years) with steep early termination fees. While some customers praise their rates and service, the overwhelming majority of reviews are negative. Particular issues include sales representatives misrepresenting terms, difficulty reaching customer service, and charges appearing without explanation. The company's practices have led many customers to warn others against signing up.

This is one of the worst electric providers i have signed up with. The rates were high when I signed up but as the rates were going down, I called them several times to see if they can move me to a cheaper plan which they were offering to their new customers. Zero help from their customer service. They keep saying that you can switch anytime but all their plans are expensive and want to lock you into a 60 month plan. I have never paid so much for electricity in the last 3 years together what I have paid in the last 4 months with Just Energy. I finally switched to another provider even if I have to pay the termination fee of $175. It will still work out better for me in the long run. You have been warned.
